Carriers claim locks are necessary because they subsidize a huge portion of the real cost of the phones; which they pay for the customer, in exchange the customer agrees to a binding contract with the plan rates. The "lock" is a software unique to each phone's imei serial number that keeps the cell phone and user "loyal" to one carrier.
